The pair of terraces houses, Casa de Maria and Casa de Juana, 123-125 Gipps Street, were erected in 1887-88 by Smith and Upton for C Allee. The architect was William Pitt, a prolific boom style architect. The two storey rendered brick facade has a two storey cast iron vernadah and an elaborate cornice and balustrade. The original licensee was Thomas Stephens when the hotel was erected in 1869. The use of the building as a hotel terminated probably in 1879, however the licence was not suspended until 1919. The two storey brick structure is rendered on the street facades and has a hipped and slated roof. The hotel is notable in the social history and development of the inner suburbs. The Ballarat Municipal Observatory is perhaps the only surviving nineteenth century private observatory in Victoria. One of the most charming rural churches of its date in Victoria, designed by Purchas and Swyer in the Decorated Gothic style, and opened in 1866. The western facade embraces an octagonal turret, a deeply recessed doorway, and a rise window with star tracery, and the north aisle incorporates plate traceried windows beneath transverse gables. |
